Quirky, quick and adventurous – FRENETICS is the piano warm-up turned new single from The Laszlo Project

It’s not every day that an arpeggiated piano warm-up exercise is the inspiration for a new single, but FRENETICS – the latest release from UK composer The LASZLO PROJECT – is exactly that.

Following strong editorial playlisting support from Spotify for his 2021 releases (Aaron’s compositions have clocked up a staggering 2 million+ streams since his first release in 2010), combined with recent radio play at Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 Jazz Show, the fourth track in the current series looks set to make similar waves in the jazz fusion space.

“This piece was initially created back in 2018 as a way to stretch and warm my fingers up before playing,” says Aaron. “I premiered it live at a show with the Lydian Collective Trio (comprising Aaron, drummer Sophie Alloway and bassist Ida Hollis) at Cadogan Hall as a fun solo ‘party piece’ to start the second set.”

What began life as a series of arpeggios developed into a manic roller-coaster of a composition, which opens with quick, unrelenting piano that mellows beautifully into a bassy Afro-beat groove in the mid-section, punctuated by free-flow improvised solos.

FRENETICS draws inspiration from the quirky compositions of Frank Zappa, as well as the playful and bright musical style of Japanese composer Hiromi Uehara. Featuring the musical talents of Sophie Alloway (Lydian Collective’s drummer), as well as Simon Joyner on trumpet and Michael Underwood on flute and saxophone, this is the last release from THE LASZLO PROJECT’S forthcoming EP.

In celebration of the EP’s release, official piano sheet music for all four tracks - KYOTO RAIN, NAGOYA MOON, LONGING and FRENETICS – will also be available to purchase as part of a special edition digital download.

FRENETICS will be available to buy/stream from 6th August, and pre-order on Bandcamp from 30th July via https://laszloproject.fanlink.to/frenetics
